Arthur Apps was the son of John and Emma Apps (née Parish) of Bishopsteignton where he was born in 1898. His military record is currently not known.
W. E. BACK
1799 Private William Ernest Back of the 42nd Battalion, the Australian  Infantry. Son of Robert James and Eliza Back (née Yeoman); brother of Charles (see below). Born in Bishopsteignton in the September Quarter of 1887. Died 6 June 1917 aged 29.

2nd Lieutenant George Pickersgill Cable of the 5th and 2nd Battalions of the Rifle Brigade. Son of Baron Ernest Cable and his wife Lilian Sarah (née Sparkes). Born 5 December 1890 - birth registered in Newton Abbot. Died 9 May 1915 aged 23.

9132 Private Frederick George Cole of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Emma Cole (née Roberts) of Humber Cottage, Bishopsteignton. Born in Christow in 1891. Died 31 October 1916 aged 25.

M2/181850 Private John William Cawcutt of the Royal Army Service Corps.  Son of John William and Jane Cawcutt (née Hallaway); husband of Rosetta Cawcutt (née Clarke) of Cross, Cottage, Bishopsteignton. Born in Reading in 1885.  Died 2 August 1917 aged 32. Buried in the Higher Cemetery, Exeter.

26096 Private Richard Ernest Gill of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of James and Sarah Gill formerly of Railway Cottage, Bishopsteignton; husband of the late Elizabeth Anne Gill (née Townsend) of Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the September Quarter of 1883. Died 7 March 1917 aged 33.
C. E. KOEBEL
Captain Charles Edward Koebel of the Queen's (Royal West Surrey) Regiment, attached to the Lancashire Fusiliers. Son of Oscar and Emma Koebel who came to live in Bishopsteignton. Born in Croydon in the March Quarter of 1878. Died of wounds at Gallipoli, on Aug. 24, 1915 aged 36.

280054 Leading Stoker Thomas James Kidston of the Royal Navy, HMS Ariadne. Son of John and Louisa Kidston of 4, Clannage St, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton on 28 March 1876. Died 26 July 1917 aged 41. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

278881 Leading Stoker Frederick John Manning of the Royal Navy, HMS Doris. Son of the late William and Elizabeth P. Manning, of 6, Fore St., Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in 1878. Died 31 May 1918 aged 41. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial.

K/18439 Stoker 1st Class William Henry Newton of the Royal Navy, HMS Defence. Son of Henry Francis and Susan Newton, of 5, Radway Court, Bishopsteignton. Born in Ottery St. Mary 21 September 1894. Died 31 May 1916 in the Battle of Jutland aged 21.

20882 Lance Corporal Ernest John Passmore of the 10th Battalion, the York & Lancaster Regiment. Son of Alfred and Sarah Passmore, of Radway St., Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the March Quarter of 1890. Died 5 June 1916 aged 26.

Believed to be George Frederick Parish, son of George and Elizabeth Ann Parish of  Radway Street, Bishopsteignton who was born in Bishopsteignton in 1888. His military record is not yet confirmed.

25581 Lance Corporal Charles Henry Payne of the 6th Battalion, the Somerset Light Infantry. Son of Charles and Ellen Louise Payne, of Bishopsteignton; husband of  Sarah Jane Payne, of 88, Orchard Portman, Taunton. Born in Shaldon in 1889. Died 16 September 1916 aged 27.
S. G. RIDGEWAY
44301 Private Stephen George Ridgeway of the 2nd/4th Battalion, the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Minnie Amelia Ridgeway, of Radway, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the June Quarter of 1899. Died 24 June 1918 aged 19.
W. J. SHARLAND

12022 Private William James Sharland of the 10th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment.  Son of James and Emma Elizabeth Sharland, of Fore St., Bishopsteignton. Born in Pembroke in the March Quarter of 1893. Died 20 November 1916 aged 23.

 

From the Teignmouth Post, 15 December 1916:

"We much regret to report the death of Private W. Sharland of Bishopsteignton who was killed while serving with the Devonshire Regiment on the Macedonian Front on November 20th. Deceased, who enlisted at the commencement of the war, saw service in France for a short period before  being sent to the Eastern theatre of of war. He is very well known locally, and, always of a cheery disposition, was a great favourite of wll who knew him. He was a very promising athlete, and prior to proceeding on active service, won a magnificent silver cup at Bath in a race open to soldiers of the Command. He was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Sharland of Fore Street, and great sympathy is felt for them in the great loss they have sustained. Mr.. Sharland is a Chief Petty officer in His Majesty's Navy."

Believed to be 11393 Private William Taylor of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and the late Elizabeth Taylor. Born in Kingsteignton in 1893  Died 6 October 1916 aged 23.

202127 Private Harry Garland Vanstone of the 2nd/4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Amelia Vanstone, of 2, Fore St., Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the December Quarter of 1893. Died 7 January 1917 aged 24.

20853 Private John Walling of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Born in the March Quarter of 1894. Died 24 September 1916 aged 22.
G. A. WARREN
160645 Chief Yeoman of Signals George Ambrose Warren of the Royal Navy, HMS Lion. Son of James and Emma Warren; husband of Jessie Grills Warren, of 4, Orchard Terrace, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the March Quarter of 1873.  Died 28 December 1918 aged 46. Held Long Service and Good Conduct Medals.  Served in the operations in the Persian Gulf (1909-1914); also at the Battle of Jutland. Buried in the churchyard at Bishopsteignton.
C. E. WALLIS
42625 Private Clifford Edward Wallis of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Clifford B. and Eleanor Ann Wallis (née Swain), of School House, Bishopsteignton. Born in Bishopsteignton in the March Quarter of 1896.  Died 25 April 1918 aged 22. (See plaque below)
T. R. SWETTENHAM
Major Thomas Robert Easton Wybault Warren-Swettenham of the 2nd Battalion, the East Yorks Regiment. Son of Robert Warren-Swettenham and Amelia Marion Warren Swettenham, of Swettenham Hall, Congleton, Cheshire; husband of Emmété Florence Warren Swettenham (née Cope), of Homestead, Dawlish. Died 6 February 1915 aged 48.

C. BACK
K/6263 (Dev) Petty Officer Stoker Charles Back of the Royal Navy, HMS Vivid. Son of Robert and Elizabeth Back of Radway Street, Bishopsteignton; husband of Lilian Back of 29 Laura Road, St Michael's, Paignton; brother of William Back (see above). Born 7 January 1892 in Bishopsteignton. Died 7 January 1920 aged 27. Buried in the churchyard at Bishopsteignton.
H. STAMP

404050 Private Horton George Stamp of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Son of Horton and Lavinia Stamp. Born at Bishopsteignton in the September Quarter of 1897. Died 21 May 1920 aged 22.

A very sad life lies behind these brief sentences. His father died in the March Quarter of 1897 aged 30; his mother died in 1900 aged 32. He then spent a couple of years with his father's mother (who, in 1901 was  already 76) but when she died, he was sent to the Orphanage for Boys run by the Church of England's Waifs and Strays Society at Sampford Peverell.

Son of Walter and Helen Biffen (née Pennyquick); husband of Hazel Mercedes Biffen (née Watling) of Bishopsteignton. Born in Reigate in the June Quarter of 1921. Died 8 January 1945 aged 23.

Charles Foster Garratt and Agnes Mary Garratt (nee Percival); husband of Annie Beryl Garratt (nee Benthall), of Bishopsteignton. Born in Chipping Norton in the March Quarter of 1889. Died 28 April 1942 aged 53. Author of several political books.

Rosa Victoria Turpin. Civilian of Shimpitts, Bishopsteignton. Daughter of the late William James and Ella Rosa Smith, of 2 South Devon Terrace, Newton Abbot and wife of Thomas Turpin (former name SMITH). Born in the September Quarter of 1887.
