BROADCLYST  - THE WAR MEMORIAL - WORLD WAR 2

BroadlystWarMemPart2

(The complete War Memorial can be seen on the World War 1 page)

©Richard J. Brine

Most World War 1 Memorials list names in alphabetical order, death being the great leveller. On the Memorial tablet inside the Church of St. John the Baptist in Broadclyst, the men are strictly segregated according to rank - officers, non-commissioned officers and men - each have their separate listings.

To the original rectangular panel on which the First World War dead are remembered, a smaller, shaped panel was added below, after World War 2, to form a unified monument. The upper part is headed with the words:

TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN REMEMBRANCE OF OUR MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND AND FOR FREEDOM IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919.

The later, curved panel below contains an alphabetical listing and is headed by these words:

IN MEMORY OF THESE MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES

IN THE CAUSE OF HUMAN FREEDOM 1939 - 1945.
