459432 Private Frederick Thomas Andrews of the 25th Field Ambulance, the Royal Army Medical Corps. Son of the late Thomas Andrews and Mary E. Andrews of 45, Innerbrook Rd., Chelston, Torquay. Born in Torquay in the March Quarter of 1894. Died 30 November 1917 aged 23.
HARRY BASTIN  
302680 Private Harry Bastin of the 12th Battalion, the Royal Scots Regiment. Son of Henry and Beatrice Bastin (née Pile), of 45, Mallock Road, Chelston, Torquay. Born in 1899. Posted missing in Belgium 22 April 1918 aged 19. Commemorated by a cross in St. Saviour's churchyard, Torquay.
WILLIAM BLIGHT
71158 Private William James Blight of the 2nd Battalion, the  Devonshire Regiment. Son of John Farr Blight of 38, Walnut Rd., Chelston, Torquay and H Pinhoearriet his late wife. Born in Paignton in the June Quarter of 1899. Died 21 April 1918 aged 19. Buried in the Torquay Cemetery.
FRANK BONYUN
Second Lieutenant Frank Vernon Bonyun of the 32nd Squadron, the Royal Flying Corps. Son of William Austin Bonyun and Ida Bonyun, of "Hummers Knott," Ashfield Road, Chelston. Born in Trinidad in the British West Indies in 1899. Died 2 January 1918 aged 18.

M/12064 Cook's Mate Albert George Bourhill of the Royal Navy, HMS Defence. Son of David and Kate Bourhill (née Hodgson) of "Fairlight", Sherwell Lane, Chelston, Torquay; brother of James Frederick Bourhill (see below). Born in Waltham Cross, Herts, 21 February 1896 - moved to live in Torquay. Died 31 May 1916 aged 20.

FRANK CHAPMAN
187545 Private Albert Frank Chapman of the 8th Battalion, the Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). Son of Thomas Caleb and Clara Y. Chapman (née Perrow), of 56, Mallock Rd., Chelston; brother of George Chapman (see  below). Born in Chelston in the March Quarter of 1893. Died 31 August 1918 aged 25.

PLY/15634  Private William John Lashbrook Cole ("John") of the Plymouth Battalion, the Royal Naval Division, the Royal Marine Light Infantry (enlisted 11 March 1912).  Son of Robert William and Mary Cole (née Lashbrook) of 19 Mallock Road, Chelston. Born in Chelston 28 March 1896. Died 29 December 1915 aged 19.

12008 Private Francis George L. Damerell of "A" Coy. the 10th Battalion, the  Devonshire Regiment. Son of William Henry and Sarah Jane Damerell (née Tickell) of The Cottage, Follaton,. Born in Chelston in the June Quarter of 1897.  Died 24 April 1917 aged 20.

11218  Driver George Davies of the 4th Div. Ammunition Col., the Royal Field Artillery. Son of William and Ellen Davies; husband of Annie Emma Davies (née Maddern), of 25, Innerbrook Rd., Chelston. Born in 1882. Died 25 October 1917 aged 35.
GEORGE EASTERBROOK
Believed to be 241984  Private George Frederick Easterbrook of the 2nd/8th Battalion, the Worcestershire Regiment. Son of Alfred and Bertha Easterbrook (née Davis) of 33 Mallock Rd., Chelston. Born in Cockington in the March Quarter of 1896. Died 9 October 1917 aged 21.
SAMUEL HAWKINS
447388  Private Samuel Hawkins of the 14th Battalion, the  Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment). Son of Samuel and Elizabeth Hawkins (née Drake) of Chelston Vale. Born in Cockington in the March Quarter of 1889. Died 26 September 1916 aged 27. He had Canadian Nationality and is commemorated on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.
CHARLES HEWETT
234444 Leading Seaman Charles Hewett of the Royal Navy, HMS Goliath. Son of Edwin and Mary Ann Hewett (n?0e Penwell) of Chelston; brother of Mark and Walter (see below). Born in Cockington in the June Quarter of 1888. Died 13 May 1915 aged 27.
MARK HEWETT
859736 Private Mark Hewett of the 43rd Battalion, the  Canadian Infantry (Manitoba Regiment). Son of Edwin and Mary Ann Hewett (née Penwell) of Chelston; brother of Charles (see above) and Walter (see below). Born in Cockington in the September Quarter of 1893. Died 15 November 1917 aged 24.  He had Canadian Nationality and is commemorated on the Canadian Virtual War Memorial.
WALTER HEWETT
Private Walter Merrick Hewett - his military history is not yet known and only his rank is shown on the Torquay War Memorial. Son of Edwin and Mary Ann Hewett (née Penwell) of Chelston; brother of Charles and Mark (see above). Born in Warwick in the June Quarter of 1899. Date and details of his death are not yet known.
HARRY HOOPER
J/1433  Able Seaman Harry Hooper of the Royal Navy, HMS Gibraltar. Son of George Hooper, of 4, Waterloo Rd., Ellacombe, Torquay, and the late Mary Grace Hooper (née Beare). Born in Torquay 22 December 1890. Died 31 August 1916 aged 24. Buried in the Torquay Cemetery.
JOHN HORNBROOK
865255 Corporal John Hornbrook of the 1093rd Battery, the  Royal Field Artillery. Son of John and Mary Elizabeth Hornbrook, of 10, Upton Rd., Torquay; husband of Jessie Hornbrook (née Harry), of 4, Walnut Mews, Chelston, Torquay. Born in Torquay in the June Quarter of 1873. Died 15 June 1918 aged 45. Buried at Peshawar.
FELIX LOCKYER
Second Lieutenant Felix Courtenay Lockyer of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Ernest Alfred and Lilian Jane Lockyer (née Hussey), of The Highlands, Chelston. Born in Highworth, Wiltshire in the March Quarter of 1896. Died 12 February 1917 aged 21.
COLIN MacLAVERTY
Captain Colin Johnstone MacLaverty of the 1st Battalion, the  King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Son of the Rev. Alexander Maclaverty and Mary Eugenia Maclaverty (nee Tombs); husband of Geraldine Antoinette Hodgson (formerly Maclaverty née Hewat), of The Elms, Hereford. Born in Monmouth in the March Quarter of 1879. Killed in action early on 18 September 1916 aged 37. 
CHARLES MALLOCK
Major Charles Herbert Mallock of the 23rd Army Brigade, the Royal Field Artillery. Son of Richard Mallock MP and his first wife, Mary Jones Dickson ; husband of Margaret Iris B. Mallock (née Bazley-White). Born in Cockington in the June Quarter of 1878. Died 5 November 1917 aged 39.  Awarded the DSO - citation not yet found.
ALEC MERCER
T/242044 Private Alec Walter Gerald Mercer of the 1st Battalion, the East Kent Regiment. Son of John and Elizabeth Mercer (née Weston) of Higher Walnut Road, Cockington. Born in Coventry in the March Quarter of 1882, Died 21 November 1917 aged 35.
ARTHUR MILNE
79858 Lance Corporal Arthur William Milne of  "B" Coy. 31st Battalion, the Canadian Infantry (Alberta Regiment). Son of Frederick Law and Amy Beatrice Milne (née Prest), of Ochiltrie, Torquay. Born in Sweden 31 July 1885.. Died 13 June 1916 aged 30.
SIDNEY MOORE
14511 Private Sidney George Moore of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Moore of 62, Sherwell Hill, Chelston. Born in Torquay in the March Quarter of 1891. Died 25 September 1915 aged 23.
FRANCIS OAKELEY

Lieutenant Francis Eckley Oakeley of the Royal Navy, H.M. Submarine D2. Son of the late Rev. James and Frances Elizabeth Oakeley (née Eckley). Born in Hereford in the March Quarter of 1891. Died 1 December 1914 aged 23. (Educated at Dartmouth Naval College, four International rugby caps - Mike Hagger has included Oakley in his commemoration list of International rugby players who died in World War 1 and notes his presence in Chelston shortly before War broke out.

ALGERNON PALMER
His full military record is not yet known. Private Algernon William Palmer was the son of George and Minnie Palmer (née Atkins). He was born in Chelston in the June Quarter of 1895. He is also commemorated on the Torquay War Memorial.
WALTER PAYNE
29719 Private Walter Ernest Payne of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Harriet Winnie Payne (née Stevens) of 40, Mallock Rd., Chelston. Born in Marldon in 1897 March. Died 26 October 1917 aged 20.
ARTHUR PUTT
Z/2604  Lance Sergeant Arthur Robin Putt of the 16th Battalion, the  Rifle Brigade. Son of Charles and Annie Putt (née Stone) of 20, Lower Thirburn Rd., Torquay. Born in Torquay in the June Quarter of 1891.  Died 21 March 1918 aged 28.
CARL RENDELL

His military record is not yet confirmed. This young man would have been under recruitment age for most of World War 1, having been born in 1901. The absence of his name from military records suggests that he fought and died (as so  many young men did)  under an assumed identity.

Carl Vernon Rendell was the twin son (twin = Ruth Marion) of Theodore and Ada Rendell ( née Sievier) of  Walnut Road Chelston. He was born in Chelston in 1901. 

 GOODWIN SHINNER
Lieutenant William Goodwin Blake Shinner (known as Goodwin Shinner) of the 28th Battalion, the  London Regiment (Artists' Rifles). Promotion to Lieutenant from the rank of Corporal gazetted 17 March 1915. Son of William and Ada Shinner (née Turner). Born in Cockington in the March Quarter of 1895. Died in France 2 January 1918 aged 22. Also remembered on a personal Memorial Cross in St. Saviour's Churchyard, Torquay. (His father was a signalman at Torre Station).
JOHN SMITH
Two men named Private J. Smith are commemorated on the Torquay War Memorial.  This man's identity is not yet confirmed.
HARRY SNOW
20862 Private Harry Whiddon Snow of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Reuben and Ellen Snow (née Whiddon). Born in Cockington in the December Quarter of 1896. Died 6 September 1916 aged 20.
ERNEST SOPER
S/4/084853 Sergeant Ernest James Soper of  "A" Supply Company, the Army Service Corps. Son of Tom and Sarah Soper, of Torquay; husband of Louisa A. H. Soper (née Sanders), of 15, Sanford Crescent, Chelston. Born in Torquay in 1875. Died 17 September 1915 aged 40. Buried in the Torquay Cemetery.
WILLIAM STROUD
115268 Shipwright 2nd Class (Pensioner) William Edward Stroud of the Royal Navy, HMS Cressy. Son of Edward Stroud; husband of Ada Louise Stroud, of "Crendon," 6, Innerbrook Rd., Chelston. Born in Bridgwater 23 November 1859. Died 22 September 1914 aged 54. Commemorated on the Naval Memorial at Portsmouth. Awarded the Long Service and Good Conduct Medals, the Egyptian Medal and the Khedive's Bronze Star.
SIDNEY SWEENEY
305766 Rifleman Sidney R. Sweeney of the 5th Battalion, the London Regiment (London Rifle Brigade), attached to the London Regiment (Post Office Rifles). Son of William and Annie Sweeney (née Paige). Born in Torquay in the March Quarter of 1900. Died 10 August 1918 aged 18. 
CECIL THOMAS
6153 Private William Henry Cecil Thomas (known as Cecil Thomas) of the 1st/4th Battalion, the  Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. Son of Mrs. Thomas, of 41, Sycamore Grove, New Malden, Surrey; husband of Elsie Ada Thomas (née Bradley), of "St. Margarets," Belmont Rd., Torquay. Born in Torquay in the December Quarter of 1885. Died 16 August 1916 aged 30.
WILLIAM TOPE
36572 Private William Henry Tope of the Labour Corps, the West Somerset Yeomanry, transferred with new number  (481940)  to the 661st Agricultural Company. Son of the late William Tope and Annie Tope, of 3, Rosary Rd., Chelston.  Born in Shiphay in the March Quarter of 1901. Died 6 November 1918 aged 27. Buried in the Torquay Cemetery.

36309 Private Claudian Stewart Tyler of the 2nd Battalion, the Wiltshire Regiment. Son of Albert and Mary Tyler (née Davies) of Torquay. Born in Bristol in the December Quarter of 1899. Died 4 November 1918 aged 19.
FRANK WILLS
Second Lieutenant Thomas George Francis Wills (known as Frank Wills).  Son of Thomas Frederick and Gwendolyn Mary Wills (née Rowlands), of "Ambersgate," Solsbro Rd., Torquay. Born in Newton, Wales, in the June Quarter of 1894. Died 2 September 1918 aged 24.
GILBERT WINGET
609 Corporal Gilbert Joseph Winget of the  12th (Prince of Wales's Royal) Lancers. Son of William  and JessicaWinget (née Blackmore). Born in Torquay in the March Quarter of 1884. Died 1 November 1914 aged 30.
