THE BROTHERS ARTHUR AND HARRY BOWHAY
(Harry’s full name was George Henry Bowhay, though known to his family as Harry, hence the discrepancy in the name.)
ARTHUR S. BOWHAY
Serjeant 207241 Arthur Sanders Bowhay, ‘C’ Company. 10th Battalion, Worcestershire Regiment. He previously served as Sergeant 2004, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 30th May 1918 aged 22, and is commemorated on the Soissons Memorial, France. Son of Albert Bowhay of Rock Cottage, Crowthers Hill, Dartmouth and the late M. (Eliza) Bowhay; husband of Norah Annie Bowhay of 3 Seaview, Above Town, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. It also records his date of death as 18th June 1918. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque; and a private plaque (opposite) within the church. |

HARRY BOWHAY
Private 30599 George Henry Bowhay, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 28th March 1917, and is commemorated on the Arras Memorial, France. CECIL A. BROWN
Lance Corporal 265680 Cecil Alfred Brown, ‘D’ Company, 1/6th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 13th July 1916 aged 20, and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Son of Jane Brown, of 8 Woolcott Street, Redland, Bristol, and the late Alfred Samuel Brown. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Bristol.
GEORGE K. BUCKPITT
Private 5650 George Buckpitt, 1/4th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 3rd February 1917, and is commemorated on the Basra Memorial, Iraq. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he lived at Torquay; and enlisted at Newton Abbot, Devon. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
THE BURNELL BROTHERS
The following three, Edwin, George and William Burnell, are all brothers. The 1901 census shows them living with their father William a Chief Boatman for the Coast Guard, mother Mary, and sisters Gertrude, Edith and Mary, at Salcombe Regis, Devon.
EDWIN BURNELL
Lance Corporal 14619 Edwin John Burnell, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 4th October 1917, and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Hardylass (sic), Ireland; lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. The 1901 census shows that he was born in Ardglass, Co. Down, Ireland. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque
GEORGE BURNELL
Private 10865 George Burnell, 8th (Service) Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He was killed in action on the 10th February 1916 aged 27, and is buried at Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, France. Son of William and Mary Burnell of The Post Office, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Hard Glass, Devon (sic); lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. The 1901 census shows that he was born at Sohule, Co. Cork, Ireland; and his occupation was a Telegraph Messenger. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
WILLIAM R. BURNELL
Lance Corporal S/26215 William Robert Burnell, 10th Battalion, Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action on the 14th August 1917 aged 35, and is commemorated on the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres. Son of William and Mary Burnell, of 3 Alexander Cottages, Above Town, Dartmouth; husband of Nellie M. A. Burnell of Church Cottage, Cove, Farnborough, Hants. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Scull (sic), Cork, Ireland; and lived and enlisted at Leyton, Essex. The 1901 census shows that he was born at Schule, Co. Cork, Ireland, and his occupation was as a Bus Conductor. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque. |
SYDNEY A. CALLARD
Private 20558 Sidney Abraham Callard, 1st Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He died of wounds on the 5th January 1917 aged 33, and is buried at Bethune Town Cemetery, France. Husband of Alice Maud Callard of Bayards Cove, Dartmouth. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and lived at Dartmouth; and enlisted at Exeter. Note both the Commonwealth War Graves Commission register and Soldiers Died record his first name as Sidney. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.

FREDERICK CARDER
Stoker 1st Class K/34863 Frederick Carder, HMS Broke, Royal Navy. He died on the 20th April 1917, and is buried at Paignton Cemetery, Devon. He was born in Dartmouth in 1893. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque.
JAMES CARDER
Private 26750 Ernest James Triggs Carder, 3rd Battalion, Devonshire Regiment. He died on the 29th July 1916 aged 37, and is buried at Paignton Cemetery. Husband of Mrs E. Carder of 2 Alma Terrace, Well Street, Paignton. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born at Dartmouth; lived at Paignton; enlisted at Torquay; and lists his first name as ‘James’.
RICHARD CARDER
Private S/18856 Richard Goodman Carder, 1/8th (The Argyllshire) Battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders. He was killed in action on the 31st July 1917, and is buried at No Man’s Cot Cemetery, Belgium. HENRY E. CARPENTER
Private 11783 Henry Ernest Carpenter, 2nd Battalion, Coldstream Guards. He was killed in action on the 1st February 1915 and commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was born and enlisted at Dartmouth. He is also listed on the Dartmouth St Saviour's Church Plaque as H. Carpenter.
