THE ROLL OF HONOUR IN EGGESFORD CHURCH

The Roll of Honour in Eggesford Church

The Roll of Honour in Eggesford Church

©Richard J. Brine

Eggesford's Roll of Honour hangs in a conspicuous place in the church but although it is clearly written, it isn't easy to understand. That thick line which separates the first six names from the rest - what does it mean? It cannot imply birth within the parish - John Vernon was born in Coldridge and although the Hartnolls' parents lived in Eggesford during the war years, their sons were born in a variety of places far away while many of the men listed below the line were, indeed, born within the parish of Eggesford.

Harry Trigger, whose name appears on the Roll of Honour, is buried in Eggesford churchyard. James Ernest Archibald Cornall whose name is omitted from the Roll of Honour and from the War Memorial at Four Ways, Eggesford, is also buried in the churchyard. Named on the Four Ways Memorial but not included on this Roll of Honour is Frederick W. Manning.

Details of James Cornall and Frederick Manning can be found on the Eggesford War Memorial page.
