THE FIGURE OF St. GEORGE OVER THIS LYCH GATE COMMEMORATES
F. BEER
240302 Private Frederick ("Fred") Beer of the 5th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Beer. Born in Bickington in the December Quarter of 1887 but brought up in Ilsington where his father was a quarry worker. Killed in action in Austria 21 December 1917 aged 30.

The spelling of this name has so many variations that currently it has not been possible to identify this man positively.

10695 Private Alfred Courtier of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Joshua and Mary Ann Courtier; brother of Henry (see below). Born in Ilsington in the June Quarter of 1893. Died 25 September 1915 aged 22.
H. COURTIER
45706 Corporal (John) Henry Courtier of the 33rd Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps.  Son of Joshua and Mary Ann Courtier; brother of Alfred (see above). Born in Ilsington in the December Quarter of 1895. Died 12 October 1918 aged 23.
A. COX
Believed to  be Arthur William Cox, the son of William and Emma Cox who was born in Liverton in 1898. Not yet confirmed.

11300 Private Frederick Charles Cox of the Army Service Corps. Son of Charles and the late Polly Cox. Born in Ilsington in the June Quarter of 1892. The date of his death is not yet confirmed.
E. DODDRIDGE
29811 Private Ernest Doddridge of the 12th Labour Battalion, the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Son of Samuel and Elizabeth Doddridge of the Star Inn, Ilsington. Born in Ilsington in the March Quarter of 1880. Died 6 January 1917 aged 36.

60923 Private Sidney George Ellis of the 1st Battalion, the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Son of George and Ellen Ellis of Star Cottage, Ilsington; brother of William (see below). Born in Bovey Tracey in the September Quarter of 1891 but lived in Ilsington. Died 30 November 1917 at Aldershot aged 26.

61122 Private (William) Arthur Ellis of 187th Company, the Machine Gun Corps.  Son of George and Ellen Ellis of Star Cottage, Ilsington; brother of Sidney (see above). Born in Ilsington in the March Quarter of 1897. Died 2 February 1917 aged 20.

26534 Private William Charles J. Greenway of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Charles and Lydia Greenway of 2, Wilton Cottages, Blackpool. Ilsington. Born in Ilsington in the March Quarter of 1892. Died 20 December 1916 aged 24.

25733 Lance Corporal William Ilsley of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of the late William Ilsley and Elizabeth Ilsley of Winchfield, Hants; husband of Bessie (née Cooper) of Ilsington. Born in Liverpool in 1886. Died 4 October 1917 aged 31.

28298 Private Alfred Edward Joint of the 8th Battalion, the King's Own (Royal Lancashire Regiment). Son of Edward and Elizabeth Joint of Pinchford, Ilsington. Born in Ilsington in the June Quarter of 1894. Died 5 October 1918 aged 24. Buried in the churchyard of St. Michael's, Ilsington.

153793 Sapper Samuel Mogridge (or Mugridge) of the 95th Field Company, the Royal Engineers. Grandson of Samuel and Elizabeth Setters of Liverton who brought him up. Born in Ilsington in the March Quarter of 1887. Died at Aldershot 1 October 1917 aged 30.
E. POTTER
40395 Private Edwin Potter of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers, formerly 21039 Private Potter of the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Maria Potter. Born in Ilsington in the December Quarter of 1880; brought up by his grandparents George and Anna Potter of Liverton Cottages. Died 23 March 1918 aged 37.
F. STEPHENS
L/17615 Private Francis Thomas Stephens of the 13th Battalion, the Royal Fusiliers. Son of John and Beatrice Stephens of Higher Brimley, Ilsington; husband of Lucy Stephens of Cheltenham. Born in Ilsington in the September Quarter of 1888. Died 23 July 1918 aged 29.
F. TAYLOR
Believed to be Frederick Taylor who was born in Ilsington in 1886. He was the son of George and Mary Taylor of Haytor Vale and the brother of Joseph Taylor. Details of his military career are not yet known.
