KINGSTEIGNTON CHURCH SCHOOLS' PRIZE DISTRIBUTION - 8 JUNE 1916

Kingsteignton Church Schools c.1925

Kingsteignton Church Schools c 1925

The Church Schools, later operated on National School lines, were built in 1848. They were managed by the Vicar and the education given had a religious bias. Because of this, in 1873, a school for non-conformists was opened in Sandpath Road. Non-denominational education did not arrive in Kingsteignton until 1933.

The annual prize distribution in connection with the Church of England Schools, Kingsteignton, took place on Thursday 8 June in the Church Schools, where many parents and old scholars were present.  The Vicar, Rev. J. L. Nightingale, presided and was supported by Mrs. Quinton (Manager) and Miss Mills.  Mr. Whiteway Wilkinson, Admiral Stoddart and mr. C. Knowles were unavoidably absent.

The Head Master, Mr. Harry W. Hawker, B.Sc., who included the report of the Head Mistress, Miss A. Butland, said the year had been a most successful one. Over 200 old scholars were in the services, and a dozen had given their lives in the great cause. The children had subscribed £16 3s. 3½p from their school pence towards the local work party of the Devon Patriotic Fund, and sent 1,334 eggs to the wounded.

The average attendance was the highest but one (last year) in the schools' list. The reports of inspectors were most satisfactory and in the Prayer Book examination every one of the 19 candidates was successful. The senior girls were taking a course of cooking.

He invited parents to co-operate and interest themselves in their children's welfare and progress. The educated elementary school child would score in after school life. He wished parents would consult teachers as to their children's future.
