Kingsteignton War Memorial 2005

Kingsteignton's War Memorial is situated in a small burial ground extension across the lane from St. Michael's Churchyard. It consists of a base, plinth, pillar and Celtic-type cross all in granite. Three faces of the plinth have decorative slate panels - the largest carries the names of the dead of World War 1 while the names from World War 2 are split between the two smaller panels. There are close-ups of the World War 2 panels at the foot of this list.

W. J. BARBER	Private William James Barber of the Pioneer Corps. Son of William and Polly Barber and husband of Ellen Maude Barber of Torquay. Died 7 January 1941. Buried in St. Michael's Churchyard, Kingsteignton.
L. W. BEARNE	Private Leslie Wilfred Bearne of the Royal Berkshire Regiment. Died 7 December 1941 aged 28.
S. BICKHAM	Chief Stoker Samuel Moist Bickham of the Royal Navy, HMS Courageous. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Bickham of Hackney, Kingsteignton and husband of Mary Jane Bickham of Kingsteignton. Born in 1889. Died 17 September 1939 aged 51.
D. R. BISHOP	Sergeant Donald Robert Bishop of 50 Squadron, the Royal Air Force. Son of Albert and Annie Bishop of Kingsteignton. Died 13 February 1943 aged 20.
F. J. BLATCHFORD	Painter 2nd Class Frederick John Blatchford of the Royal Navy, HMS Glorious. Son of Alfred and Frances Blatchford and husband of G. M. Blatchford of Kingsteignton. Died 8 June 1940 aged 31.
A. J. BOLT	Able Seaman Albert James Bolt of the Royal Navy, HMS Courageous. Son of John and Elizabeth Bolt. Born in Ottery St. Mary in 1887. Died 17 September 1939 aged 52.
G. E. BOUCHER	Sergeant (Air Gunner) George Edwin Boucher of 101 Squadron, the RAF Volunteer Reserve. Son of Albert and Lena Boucher of Sandy Gate. Died 3 November 1943 aged 23.
F. G. BOVEY	Lance Sergeant Frederick George Bovey of the 50th Squadron, the Royal Tank Regiment. Son of George and Annie Bovey of Kingsteignton. Died 12 July 1943 aged 30.
T. BREALEY	Private Thomas Henry Brealey of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Lewis and Alice Brealey of Newton Abbot and husband of Betty Maude Brealey of Kingsteignton. Died 19 October 1945 aged 21.
P. L. BROWNING	Warrant Officer Peter Lear Browning of the Royal Air Force. Son of Frederick and Amie Joan Browning and husband of Betty Browning of Stopsley, Beds. Died 15 April 1944 aged 22.

I. F. CARNELL	No military records have been found in this name but there are records for Flight Sergeant Basil Carnell (Air Gunner) of 214 Squadron, RAF Volunteer Reserve. Son of Harry and Eva Carnell (Harold Carnell of Kingsteignton?) and husband of Paula Carnell of Newton Abbot. Died 12 March 1943 aged 21.

Son of the late Thomas and Ethel Murray; fostered in Shropham, Salop; husband of Muriel Brimmicombe of Kingsteignton and father of Josephine. Born in Doncaster 12 October 1919. Died as a Japanese prisoner of war 19 November 1944.aged 25.

Winser" but it is possible that the man below was known as "Bert Winser" and there are records for Marine Samuel Albert George Winser of the Royal Marines, HMS Courageous. Son of George and Emma Winser and husband of Florence Winser of Newton Abbot. Died 17 September 1939 aged 45.

Not listed on the War Memorial but buried in a war grave in St. Michael's Churchyard, Kingsteignton is Chief Stoker Frederick William Full of the Royal Navy, HMS Drake. He died on 27 November 1940.

REGINALD TOLLEY

Also not listed on the War Memorial but buried in a war grave in St. Michael's Churchyard, Kingsteignton, is Driver Reginald Tolley of the Royal Army Service Corps. Son of Lewis and Mary Tolley of Kingsteignton and husband of Kathleen Tolley, also of Kingsteignton. Died 19 December 1947 aged 32.
