NETHEREXE AND REWE - THE 1914 WAR MEMORIAL

 

The memorial was placed in a prominent position beside the main Exeter to Tiverton road at a midway point between the two communities and consists of an ancient cross which was renovated for use as a memorial.

The plinth of the old cross had been remounted. Each face of the new plinth has been inscibed as follows:

Face 1: This ancient cross was restored in memory of those who died for their king and country 1914 - 1919

Face 2: Netherexe names

Face 3: Thanks be to God which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

Face 4: Rewe names

 

NETHEREXE

E. DEWDNEY
1833 Private Ernest Dewdney of the 2nd/7th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Dewdney of Netherexe.  Born in Netherexe in 1893. Died 17 December 1915 aged 23.  Buried in Netherexe churchyard.
F. SNELL
2911 Private Frederick George Snell of the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry. Son of William and Bessie Snell of 1 Mill Cottages, Stoke Canon. Born in Shobrooke in 1897. Died 10 April 1915 aged 18. Buried in Rewe Churchyard. (see photo below)
J. POOLE
13588 Private John Poole of the 5th Battalion, the Dorsetshire Regiment. Son of James and the late Mary Elizabeth Poole of Hill Cottages,  Netherexe; brother of William (see  below). Born in Netherexe in 1899. Died 26 September 1916 aged 17. 
W.POOLE
2079 Lance Corporal William Poole of the "B" Squadron, the 7th Dragoon Guards ( Household Cavalry). Son of James and the late Mary Elizabeth Poole of Hill Cottages, Netherexe; brother of John (see  above). Born in Chagford in 18990. Died 6 May 1918 aged 28. Buried in Bideford Cemetery.

16785 Private Arthur John Parish of the 10th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Lydia Jane Parish (nëe Westlake) of Rewe and the late George Parish. Born in North Tawton in 1897. Died 24 April 1917 aged 20. 
B. PAYNE
17980 Guardsman Bertram ("Bertie") Payne of the Coldstream Guards. Son of henry and Sarah Payne. Born in Rewe in 1896. Died 27 November 1917 aged 21. 
H, VANSTONE
38121 Private Harry Vanstone of the 1st Battalion, the Royal Berkshire Regiment (Princess Charlotte's). Son of John and Ann Vanstone of Barrow Cottages, Rewe. Born in Rewe in the September Quarter of 1888. Died 25 March 1918 aged 29. 
J. EWINGS
38032 Private James Ewings of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Ewings. Born in Cruwys Morchard in 1898. Died 19 August 1917 aged 19.  
L. MOORE
475479 Private Leonard Charles Moore of Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (the Eastern Ontario Regiment). Son of John and Emily Moore. Born in Rewe in the December Quarter of 1889. Died 10 June 1916 aged 27.  Emigrated to Canada March 1912.
