NOTES:
This is a transcript of the 1841 Census Return for Enumeration District No.9 in the Registrar's District of Teignmouth and the Superintendent's District of Newton Abbot, for part of the Parish of St. Nicholas and District (now known as Shaldon and Ringmore) in the Hundred of Wonford.
It covers an area from the road leading to Torquay to the edge of the parish. Eastwards, it includes all the houses lying on the south side of the said road from St. Nicholas (Shaldon) to Newton Abbot.
The Census of 1841 relates to the night of 7 June 1841. Many men from Shaldon and Ringmore were away at the Newfoundland fisheries during the summer months hence the large number of households headed by a woman. The description "mariner's wife" in the "profession" column of the original was crossed through in most cases - in the few cases it was not, it is shown.
The column headed H* shows separate households. Within a single dwelling there would have been several households.
N.B. Transcriptions should always be checked at source. Microfiches of the original 1841 census returns for Devon can be found in the West Country Studies Library in Exeter. |
