1914 - 1918
J H M ARDEN DSO
Lieut.-Col. John Henry Morris Arden of the RAF No 3 Cadet Wing, formerly of the Worcestershire regiment and the 2nd Battalion Reserve of Officers. Son of the Rev. A H Arden (Christian Missionary and author of many books). Born in St Gilles, Suffolk in the March Quarter of 1875. Died in Cairo 22 July 1918 after a most distingushed career; buried in Hadra War Cemetery. Awarded the DSO for action at Neuve Chapelle March 1916.

K/39671 Stoker 2nd Class Harry Harold Brimilcombe, the Royal Navy, HMS Vivid. Son of George and Emily Brimilcombe. Born in Stokeinteignhead 19 October 1891. Died 19 February 1917 aged 25. Buried in the churchyard of St Andrew's, Stokeinteignhead.
H R CLARKE
9842 Corporal Harry Rice Clark, the Royal Marines, HMS Emperor of India. Son of John and Sarah Clark; husband of Alice J Clarke (née Pack). Born  10 December 1883 in Combeinteignhead. (Enlisted 26 December 1901.) Died 22 August 1919 aged 37.
E B CONYBEARE
Captain Edward Bruce Conybeare of the 1st and 9th Battalions, the Worcestershire Regiment. Son of Henry (late Indian Civil Service) and Amy Maxwell Conybeare of Platway, Shaldon; brother of Maynard (see below). Born in the NE Province, India in 1893. Died 5 April 1916 aged 23. Mentioned in Despatches twice. Awarded the MC for action at Neuve Chapelle 28 April 1915.

Lieutenant Maynard Henry Crawford Conybeare of the 114th Mahrattas, attached to the 7th Battalion, the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Henry (late Indian Civil Service) and Amy Maxwell Conybeare of Platway, Shaldon; brother of Edward (see above). Born in the NE Province, India in 1891. Died at home 14 January 1915 aged 24. Buried in the cemetery of St Nicholas Church, Shaldon.
W J COTTON
121860 William James Cotton of the Royal Naval Reserve. Husband of Maud Cotton. Born in Teignmouth 16 February 1865. After his original service contract ended, this man served in the Coastguard Service at Barton-on-Humber, Lincolnshire, with the rank of Boatman. Details of his subsequent service in the Great War and the date of his death are not yet known

PLY/2042(S) Private Harold Frederick Dommett of the 1st Royal Marine Battalion of the Naval Division, the RMLI. Son of Abraham and Emily Dommett of Combeinteignhead. Born  in Exeter 8 March 1899. Enlisted 9 April 1917. Died 25 August 1918 aged 19.

24475 Private Richard James Dyer of the 6th Battalion, the Dorset regiment. Son of George and Harriet Dyer. Born in Stokeinteignhead in the December Quarter of 1897. Died 27 August 1918 aged 20.
L O GRAEME
Lt-Col. Laurence Oliphant Graeme of the 1st Battalion, the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. Son of Lt-Col. Laurence Graeme and his wife Catherine. Born in Scotland in 1873 but later lived in Shaldon. Died 10 March 1916 aged 43. He was made a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) and was three times Mentioned in Despatches.

27078 Private George James Gordon Hill of the 7th Battalion, Prince Albert's Regiment (Somerset Light Infantry); formerly 23781, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Thirzina Hill of Stokeinteignhead; brother of Harry (see below).  Born in Stokeinteignhead in the September Quarter of 1888. Died 31 March 1917 aged 28.

19246 Private Henry ("Harry") Walter J. Hill of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of George and Thirzina Hill of Stokeinteignhead; brother of George (see above). Born in Stokeingteignhead in the December Quarter of 1897. Died 4 September 1916 aged 18.

216543 Gunner Walter George Horton of  "B" Battery, 15 Brigade the Royal Horse Artillery. Son of William Henry and Emily Horton of Higher Gabwell, Stokeingteignhead. Born in Stokeinteignhead  in the June Quarter of 1898. Died 29 April 1918 aged 19.

51308 Rifleman George Thomas Merchant of the 1st/5th Battalion, The King's (Liverpool) Regiment. Son of Harriet Merchant and the late Henry Merchant of Rinmore Road, Stokeinteignhead. Born in Ringmore in 1887. Died 30 November 1917 aged 30.

34031 Sergeant Thomas Henry Mitchell of the 6th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Son of Thomas and Annie Mitchell. Born in Shaldon in the June Quarter of 1894. Died 23 September 1917 aged 23.
W H SARAHS
ONC/60131 Petty Officer William Henry Sarahs of the Canadian vessel, HMCS Niobe. Son of the late William Sarahs; husband of Alice Sarahs (née Kirton) of Combeinteignhead. Born in Combeinteignhead in the March Quarter of 1881. Died 7 July 1915 aged 34. Buried in Halifax Cemetery, St Johns, Newfoundland. Awarded the Military Cross.

426188 Lance Cpl Frederick Thomas Stephens of the 46th Battalion, the Canadian Infantry (Saskatchawan Regiment). Son of Frederick and Emily Stephens (née Burn) of 1 Vine Cottage, Ringmore. Born 14 March 1893. Died 30 September 1918 aged 23. Awarded the Military Medal.

53393 Sergeant George Stephens of the 18th Battalion, the Canadian Infantry ( Western Ontario Regiment). Parents not yet identified. Born in 1898. Died 8 August 1918 aged 22.

43798 Private John Arthur Taylor of the 15th Battalion, the Royal Scots Guards. Son of John Arthur and Eleanor Taylor of Elmira, Shaldon; husband of Beatrice May Taylor of Teignsnape, Shaldon. Born in 1883, Died 22 March 1918 aged 35.

84232 Private Thomas Richard Worth of the 23rd Battery, the Machine Gun Corps. Son of George and Ellen Lucy Worth (née Ball) of Maidencombe; husband of Edith Mary Worth (née Venning) of 123 St Marychuch Road, Babbacombe. Born in Stokeinteignhead in the June Quarter of 1884. Died 29 June 1918 aged 34.

135741 Flying Officer John Dawson Blencowe of the RAF VR, 149 Squadron. Son of Captain Frederick John Blencowe and his wife Ethel Helen Blencowe; husband of Margaret E Barrett. Born in London (Lambeth) in the March Quarter of 1915. Died 24 February 1944 aged 29.

14410289 Sergeant Bertram John Crosse of the 1st/4th Battalion, the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. Son  of Bertram Harry and Phyllis Mary Crosse; husband of Daisy Eveline Cross of Stokeinteignhead. Born in Plymouth in the September Quarter of 1924. Died 6 July 1946 aged 21.

5615801 Private Reginald Stanley Lock of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Ernest and Ethel Lock of Stokeinteignhead (formerly of Holsworthy). Born in Holsworthy in the December Quarter of 1908. Died 8 December 1941 aged 32.
