W.R.ALFORD	2371 Private William Rowsell Alford of the 1st/4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Grandson of Mary Alford of Uffculme and brought up by her. Born in Uffculme in 1888. Died 3 February 1917 aged 29.
H.ARCHER	Major Harry Archer of the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Husband of Mary Archer of Salem House, Uffculme. Born in Surrey in 1880. Died 25 November 1917 aged 38.
P.ATTEWELL	Private Percival Attewell of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Rose Attewell of Cullompton. Born in Berkshire in 1893. Died 4 September 1916 aged 23.
A.W.AUTHERS	Able seaman Albert William Authers of the Royal Navy, HMS Princess Irene. Husband of Harriet Authers. Born in Burlescombe 3 January 1885. Died 27 May 1915 aged 30, when his ship was lost.
J. BIFFIN	11027 Lance Corporal James Biffin of the 9th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Harriet Biffin; brother of William (see below). Born in Oakford in the March Quarter of 1896. Died 6 October 1915 aged 20.
W.T.BIFFIN	8301 Private William Thomas Biffin of the 15th (The King's) Hussars. Son of William and Harriet Biffin; brother of James (see above). Born in Kentisbeare in 1889. Died 25 November 1917 aged 28.
R.J.E.BRADBEER	Able Seaman Richard James Edwin Bradbeer of the RNVR, SS Obuasi. Son of James and Eugenie Bradbeer of Cullompton. Born in Cullompton in the September Quarter of 1898. Died as a POW 11 July 1917 aged 19. Bridget Hill tells the full story of Richard Bradbeer's sacrifice on her website at www.greatwar.eclipse.co.uk/WWImore/Bradbeer_RJE_more.htm The extract below is a brief extract from her article: (The Obuasi had a single gun on board) "At noon on the 8th of July 1917, the Obuasi was struck by a torpedo, which flooded the stokehold and put the engines out of action. Simultaneously two submarines were sighted, and the master, Mr. Percy Sola, ordered the crew into the boats. He himself, with the two gunners D. Richardson and R. Bradbeer, remained on board, retaining the gig for their own use, and commenced firing at the submarine which was chasing the Onitsha. They fired five shots, and Onitsha got away safely. Two more torpedoes were then discharged at the Obuasi, the first one passing under her, and the second striking her and causing her to list considerably. The master and gunners then took to the gig, and the submarine came alongside and made them prisoners. It then fired some shots into the SS Obuasi which soon afterwards sank. The self-sacrifice of Captain Sola and his gunners was highly and deservedly commended, as by remaining on board and firing their gun they diverted the submarines’ attack upon themselves, and undoubtedly saved their sister ship. The gunners received mention [in dispatches], and the master the D.S.C. [Distinguished Service Cross]. The rest of the crew were picked up the same evening by a destroyer, and landed at Queenstown. Whether Bradbeer and Richardson sustained injuries during the engagement is not known, but both died three days later, on 11th July 1917, as prisoners of war. Captain Sola survived.

L.J.BUTT	45663 Private Leonard John Butt of the 8th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Frank and Elizabeth Butt of Cullompton. Born in Thorverton in 1894. Died 28 March 1917 aged 23.
G.CREWS	8267 Lance Corporal George Crews of the 1st Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary Crews of Uffculme, Born in Uffculme in 1886. Died 24 January 1915 aged 27.
J.DIBBLE	65399 Private James Dibble of the 23rd Battalion, the Cheshire Regiment. Son of Louisa and the late John Dibble. Born in Westleigh in 1899. Died 20 June 1918 aged 19.
A.V.DIMOND (aka DIAMOND)	2407 Private Albert Victor Dimond or Diamond of the 1st/4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of John and Zillah Dimond of Burlescombe. Born in Burlescombe in the December Quarter of 1887. Died 4 January 1916 aged 29.
F.J.DREW	2411 Sergeant Francis John Drew of the 1st/4th Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Minnie Drew of Coldharbour; brother of Albert (see below). Born in Uffculme in 1895. Died 3 February 1918 aged 19.

V. WALROND	Captain (acting Major) Victor Walrond of the 36th Battalion, the Royal Horse and Royal Field Artillery. Son of Arthur and Marian Walrond of Sprydon Cote, Broadclyst. Born in Broadclyst in the March Quarter of 1890. Died 26 April 1917 aged 27.
