The family of Nicholas and Nancy Stentiford

The Genealogist's Psalm

Following in Caroline's footsteps

We have news of Zeal Monachorum this quarter which will sadden all family members who have associations with that place. On April 18th, fire broke out in the beautiful and ancient row of cottages which back on to the churchyard and one, Monk's Cottage, was virtually destroyed. The owner, himself a former fire fighter, suffers from MS and had to be rescued from the upper floor. The other cottages in the row were damaged but ultimately saved from total destruction by the actions of the fire brigade who sent ten appliances to the scene. They worked  for many hours pulling  burning thatch onto the graves below. Centre of this photo (to the left of the fireman) is the grave of James Stentiford (see Issue 14 for his story). We believe the grave in the central foreground belongs to the Hoskins family.

We have to thank no fewer than four living guest contributors this month - Dr. Brian Stentiford, Joan Schaumloffel, Geoff Ledden and Sandy Ditzig, and one posthumous contributor -Mrs. Marjorie F. Stentiford, lately of Southern Australia

Brian (who is not himself a member of Nicholas' and Nancy's Stentiford family) was given material some years ago by Marjorie and that,  together with notes sent in by Joan,  has brought new light to bear on a family we first visited in Issue 15 - the Stentifords of Buckfastleigh, who sought - and found- a far better life in Australia. Geoff has, as usual added a touch of humour and Sandy begins the story of her  journey, following in the footsteps of her ancestors, John and Caroline Western, who came to England in the 1930s to try to find out more about their roots. And because of all these interesting articles, we shall have to postpone the second part of our "Adam and Eve" story until the next Issue in September when we shall also conclude Sandy's story.

Keep in touch,

Muriel and Richard
