Janet
Hiscocks makes a welcome return as our first contributor in 2008 with
an article about Herbert Stentiford's life. Herbert was one of those
countless numbers of men who died in war, not through wounds suffered
in battles but through the effects of the wartime conditions in which
they found themselves - forerunners, perhaps of the men who died from
Gulf War syndrome. We first wrote about Herbert in Issue 47 but
Janet's research has created a far wider picture than we were able to
give at that time.
Dr.
Brian Stentiford, who originated in Torquay, sent us an interesting
story concerning his father, officially John Stentiford, but always
known as Jack. Brian comes from the same family as Huw Davies who was
one of our contributors in 2007 and both these men are descended from
the family we wrote about Issue 52 - a story which concluded with a
deserted wife and children seeking shelter in Totnes Workhouse.
The
family of the John and Catherine Stentiford we highlight in the next
story have certainly had their problems, not only with the family name
but with their first names too. We're looking for another Reginald
Stentiford in the next piece - this time, it's Reginald George
Stentiford and we should like to hear from anyone who can throw light
on this new mystery.
Finally,
an opportunity to practise our Devonshire accents and to wish everyone
a very happy New Year.
Keep
in touch,
Muriel
and Richard
