On 24 February 1903, Herbert, along with thousands of other British
soldiers, was transferred to the Army Reserve "on the expiration of
his period on Army Service".
His records show that his conduct was described as "very
good" and he said he would like to become a town postman or a
railway porter. He intended to live at 33 Clifton Street, Newtown,
Exeter.
Here follows another gap in knowledge of his whereabouts until he
married Rosa Mabel Lake on 10 June 1905 at St. Saviour's Church, Exeter
and Herbert had to provide proof of this to the army. Thereafter, Rosa
was noted as his next-of-kin in succession to his father, James
Stentiford.
There are several possibilities in the 1901 Census for Rose/Rosa as
her second name does not seem to be recorded but in 1891 in North
Tawton, she appears as Rose Mable (sic) a visitor aged seven who had
been born in London. There is an entry for Rosa Mabel Lake's birth in
the West Ham District of London for the June Quarter of 1883.
